Why is meditating so hard?

Have you ever tried meditating only to get frustrated and give up after a minute?

Did you have a good go at it for a few days and then forget all about it?

It might be because you believe one of these three myths:

#1 I don’t have the time to meditate.

Easy response to this one… meditation can be done in as little as 30 seconds.

I just timed myself – I can get six long slow deep breaths in 30 seconds.

Even this short of time can be a game-changer in lowering your stress level.

#2 I don’t have the patience for meditation.

Maybe. But I really suspect you just haven’t found a method you connect with.

Keep trying different methods.

#3 Meditation is just plain hard.

If you are trying to follow the unhelpful advice of “simply empty your mind,” then yes, it is hard. Very hard.

Do you know why?

The brain is designed to think. That’s its job and it’s quite good at it.

You can no sooner tell your brain to stop thinking as you can tell your heart to stop beating or your stomach to stop digesting.

They are all simply doing their jobs.

Give the elephant a stick.

I love the analogy of an elephant. As it walks, you can easily see how restless its trunk is – constantly moving, constantly grabbing at things.

The trick is to give the elephant a stick to hold in its trunk. Now the elephant stays focused and walks in a forward path.

The same is true for our brains. In meditation, we have to give our brains a job to do holding the proverbial stick.

Then it is SO much easier.
